After the summercourse officially ended, about half of us went on a little trip, still organized by our fabulous hosts, to Stockholm and back, with a giant ferry boat from Viking Lines. This trip we affectionately called "The Worst Cruise". The boat left Helsinki at around 18h00 on Saturday, to arrive in Stockholm the next morning. We spent the day sightseeing in Stockholm, and then came back, arriving in Helsinki on Monday morning. The nights thus were spend on the boat, were we had all luxury of good food, a night club and disco, as well as great views from the outside decks! Most photos are from the daytime in Helsinki and Stockholm, however...
Before going on board, we first bought
some food rations in a nearby supermarket. Then we assembled near
the check-in point of the boat, were we made what would have been
the Official Worst Cruise picture, if it wasn't for Mikko, taking the
picture, and Arto, who arrived a
little later... All the other WC-participants are on there, I think.
This is just one
of those great views I was talking about!! This is just outside
the harbour of Helsinki, but almost the whole way between
Helsinki and Stockholm is littered with small islands.
This is a nice
picture of our Finnish Organizers under the Finnish flag on the
Worst Cruise ferry. They gave us a lot of their time, energy and
patience in putting together an absolutely fabulous
BEST summercourse. Thank you, very-very much.
It can be quite
cold on the deck of a ferry, when you've given away your
sweater... Luckily Daniela (with my sweater) and Barbara are
there to keep me warm ;-)
Stockholm. I don't know what the exact
purpose was here, but one of the main attractions on this picture
is the 'Ericsson banana', held by Guido (with Nokia cap) and
Antonio. Massimo is also wearing his Nokia cap (backwards).
Barbara and Daniela make the picture complete.
We walked around in Stockholm approx. from 11h00 till 16h30, and though we started as one group, every once in a while we lost some people, mostly by accident, except Joao and Judit, I guess... We passed through the old center, where the royal palace is, and generally walked around. Stockholm had just hosted the Water Festival, which finished the day before, the remainings of which had not been completedly cleaned up yet.
Where do they
come from? All of a sudden, a small military parade passed by us.
It was so small that I fitted about a third of them in this
picture. We never found out what is was about...
It started with
one, and then all of a sudden everyone wanted an icecream, with
little chocolate pieces on top of it. Worth a picture I
thought...
I nearly killed myself laughing, just
after taking this picture... I didn't even know at the moment why
I took it... Probably for the same reason why Antonio went to sit
down on the bench, next to the 3 blonde (Swedish?) ladies: wanting
a picture of some of the local beauties... It was only after
taking it, that we realized that we had taken a picture of a
mother with her two (not too old) daughters. Did we have fun
about our 'mistake' !
Ready to take the boat back, we gathered on the upper deck again, with the same result as the previous day: photo shoot... On the left it's me with Jani and Arto Mäkelä (and no, they're not family), who were respectively the sc-organizer and the local BEST-president... On the right, it's yet another group photo...

This, I think, is a special photo... In
both directions of the boat-trip, we stepped outsided around
midnight to go watch the full moon on the upper deck. It
was nice and cosy, standing as close to each other as possible to keep
each other warm in the cold night, looking at the moon and some
stars...
Monday
morning, returned to Helsinki, we went to have coffee and
breakfast at a locally famous coffee house (great place), after
which we took this very last group picture. Not long after this,
the group split up once more between those who went back to
Otaniemi and those who stayed in Helsinki... {ps:
now can you find Andras??}
Now look at all the pictures from this period!
This
concludes my photo gallery and story of the Helsinki SC97.
I hope you enjoyed looking at the pictures as much as I enjoyed
the weeks in which I took them!!
