While most of us left Helsinki on Monday (or even Saturday), Daniela left Helsinki only on Tuesday, and she was flying over Brussels. As it happened, she had 5 hours to wait between planes, and so we had some opportunity to go sightseeing in the centre of Brussels. We saw some of the touristic highlights of the city: the Great Market Square, the 'Manneke Pis' and the Royal Palace. We also enjoyed the taste of a waffle with cream and strawberries... And here are some photos to proof how much fun we had.
This is the Great
Market Square in Brussels... It has a completely
medieval look, as there are no modern buildings in sight, nor
cars...
The funny thing
about this picture is, that it remembers me of Rome, with all its
statues... But no, this is Brussels as well. It's on the courtyard
of the city hall.
The 'Manneke Pis' is
probably the most famous statue of Belgium. It represents a
little boy while peeing. There are several legends on what it is
about, one of which telling that the boy defused a bomb because
he peed on it... The statue is always dressed up in some
particular clothing. Not recognizing the clothing, I asked one of
the local merchants "Qu'est-ce qu'il wearing today".
I must have been just a little confused having to mix Dutch,
English and French that day ;-). Anyway, I was told he was
wearing some Basque uniform. The picture, by the way, was taken
by a (real) Japanese girl.
